Having a rep that is easily contactable and very happy to help and advise us has been invaluable. It has saved us hours in trawling through the internet and catalogues trying to find connecting resources or resources we could do this with. Thank you!

Story Chest Big Book and CD ROM – The Hungry Giant

We used the Big Book in connection with our topic of Jack and the Beanstalk as another story featuring a giant.

We used the text for shared reading as it contained many of the Reception High Frequency Words which is very useful. The children could recognise the words by sight and use the phonic knowledge to read others. The repeated text was helpful for prediction.

Other features used were punctuation (speech marks, full stops, and exclamation marks), emboldened and enlarged text for emphasis and the different presentation of text.

The text was very clear and the illustrations interesting. The CD ROM was a useful additional resource and the children enjoyed reading the story on the interactive whiteboard.

The activities on the CD ROM were valuable and effective for group work.

Cathy Hill, Vernon Infant School, Poynton, Cheshire

A scheme of high interest readers for KS1/2. This well known series has self contained, funny and predicatable stories. Good for using with beginner readers and reluctant/SEN readers because of the style and predicatable text. Clear and attractive Teacher’s File. Ten new titles this year include The Scrubbing Machine, Splishy-Sploshy and The Hungry Giant’s Soup.

The National Literacy Association

Story Chest books provide a language rich environment where children experience success from the beginning. Story Chest has got it right!
The books encourage early positive interactions between adult and child, which encourage the learner's questions and engage their curiosity.

Mersey Street Primary School

The Children enjoy hearing and repeating various rhymes. The illustrations are superb. The humour appeals to bot adult and child. The big books are an essential part of the classroom - you can take away all the other resources, but not Story Chest!

Mersey Street Primary School

I bought this resource because I have had a high success rate when using them at previous schools. I like the fact that there are excellent story structures – repetition, visuals, vocabulary, and punctuation are targeted for early learners.

The children enjoy the story lines – they are fun! We use this resource for whole class Big Book work, and home reading for foundation stage (pre-readers to level 1).

This resource meets and extends beyond all our literacy objectives. Children want to read and love being the ‘teacher’. Parents make comments on how books are enjoyed more than home books and over 50% of the Reception class is on red level.”
